Death of businessman by police torture: Case filed against 585 villagers for cordoning PS in Barisal

Police on early Tuesday lodged a case against 585 villagers and 2 arrested for cordoning police station protesting death of a businessman.
The villagers protested death of Shahin Molla, 22, owner of a photo-studio at Salta Bazar, on June 14 night at Madaripur hospital allegedly due to torture of police after he was detained along with his two friends – Mukit Akon and Shah Alam – on June 8.
Md. Qamruzzaman, Inspector(investigation) of Dashar police station under Kalkini upazila of Madaripur said, more than 500 male and female villagers of West Dumuria, East Samarsing, Bakai, Magura and Salta villages of adjacent Gournadi upazila with procession cordoned the police station and started throwing brick bats at about 7:00 pm on Monday evening.
Police disbursed the attacker mob on Monday night and arrested Jasimuddin and Russel Sardar of Magura village of Gournadi from the spot.
Then on early Tuesday Sub- inspector Delwar Hossain, as complainant lodged a case accusing 585 villagers including 35 byname and 550 others unnamed, said Inspector Qamruzzaman.
The two detained from the spot sent to jail after producing before Madaripur judicial magistrate court and the court rejected their bail prayer, police sources informed.
Liton Bepari, one of the villagers participated in the protest, alleged that he and 15 others were injured by baton charges of police when the villagers peacefully protesting in front of the police station against the death of Shahin Molla due to torture of police after his arrest .
Mentionable , Shahin Molla, 22, son of Dubai expatriate Mostafa Molla of west Dumuria and owner of a photo-studio at Salta Bazar, was detained by police along with his two friends – Mukit Akon and Shah Alam – on June 8.
The three were brought to Dashar police station and SI Nazmul demanded Tk2 lakh as ransom money when the family members of the detainees contacted the police to free them.
Mukit and Shah Alam were released as their families paid Tk51, 000, while police sent Shahin to jail after putting 5 yaba tablets in his pockets on June 9, as they could not pay the money in time, family members of the deceased alleged.
The victim’s mother claimed to have visited Shahin in custody and quoted him as saying: “Police tortured me mercilessly for not giving the money when I was in custody of Dashar police station.”
Shahin was admitted at Madaripur Jail Hospital and was later shifted to Madaripur Sadar Hospital on June 14 night after his condition deteriorated.
Shahin died in hospital around 9:30pm June 14 night.
Emddul Huq, Dashar police station officer-in-charge, denied taking any bribes, and said Mukit and Shah Alam were released following a request by local elite Syed Babu. SI Nazmul Hasan also denied torturing Shahin and claimed that Shahin was a drug addict and a drug peddler.
