UNB, Dhaka :
Terming politically motivated the graft case against Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, BNP on Sunday alleged that the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is pushing the country towards an ‘extreme anarchy’ by behaving like a ruling party body.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Having failed to charge with corruption, the Anti Corruption Commission, which is behaving like an Awami League associate body, filed the case (against Banu)
seeking wealth statement. It’s pushing the country towards an extreme anarchy with such an attitude.”
On January 30, 2104, ACC deputy director RK Majumder filed the case with city’s Ramna Police Station against Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, mother-in-law of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, for not submitting the wealth statement to it in time. Later, the commission approved filing of the case against Banu.
Fakhrul alleged that the ACC filed the case against her with a motive to politically harass her just for a reason that she is the mother-in-law of Tarique.
“The ACC can get wealth information about anybody from the income text department if it wants. So, there’s no justification of harassing her (Banu) filing a case.”
He also alleged that the current ‘repressive regime’ is using police, ACC and judiciary against the non-political family members of opposition leaders and activists to repress them, the way it oppressed BNP men.
Fakhrul demanded the government withdraw the case immediately.
