Importers of reconditioned cars have suffered Tk 7,000 crore losses due to the ongoing blockade and hartals.
Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) came up with the claim at a press conference held at the National Press Club in the city on Monday.
“We have incurred Tk 7,000 crore business losses due to last three months blockade and intermittent hartals called by BNP-led 20 party alliance,” said MA Hamid Sharif, president of BARVIDA while reading out a written speech at the press conference.
He said nearly 6,000 imported cars remained unsold since the beginning of blockade causing huge financial losses to them. Most of the imported cars remained stranded at ports as the importers reluctance to take delivery of the vehicles fearing attacks on highways.
Apart from this, the importers had to count Tk 1.0 crore overstaying fees to the port authorities, he mentioned.
The BARVIDA leader also sought policy support from the government to make up their losses incurred due to the current political turmoil.
