UNB, Dhaka :
Newly appointed Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoît-Pierre Laramée on Monday said his country will work in partnership with the people and government of Bangladesh to secure prosperity for both nations, as Bangladesh moves towards middle-income status.
The envoy also said economic and social development are built on the foundations of good governance, peace, stability, democracy and respect for human rights, said a media release issued by the High Commission here.
Laramée, who already presented his credentials to President Abdul Hamid, spoke of how encouraging it is to see Bangladesh’s continued progress and how proud he is that Canada has been able to contribute to this progress.
Canada’s development partnership is very strong, and Canada has provided over Canadian $4 billion in aid since 1972.
There has also been remarkable growth in trade, which has grown six-fold since 2004, to Canadian $1.8 billion.
Canada continues to provide duty-free access for the vast majority of Bangladesh exports, said the media release.
The diplomat said he has been impressed by the warmness and hospitality of the Bangladeshi people in his initial days and that he looks forward to learning more about the people and the country.
During the meeting with the President, the High Commissioner spoke about the Canada-Bangladesh relationship, established over 40 years ago.
Encouraging prosperity and job creation is a priority of Canada’s. Canada is working with Bangladesh to help strengthen the enabling environment for business, including by striving to improve working conditions in the garment sector, and to ensure a better trained workforce.
This complements Canada’s longstanding work on ensuring that development brings benefits to all by investing in efforts to improve health and education services, and to address new challenges such as ending Child, Early and Force Marriage.
The High Commissioner, who is accompanied by his spouse Christiane Giroux here, served most recently as the Canadian High Commissioner to Cameroon.
