Election campaigns for the ensuing fourth phase union parishad polls in eight Jhenaidah unions is going amid threat and political pressure from the ruling party men .
The fourth phase elections will be held in eight unions out of a total 17 in Sadar Upazila on May 7.
On the other hand, the ruling party candidates brought almost same type of allegation against their counter part.
Most of the supporters of the rival or independent candidates from the ruling party and the candidates from the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are the sufferers here, alleged some of the candidates participating in the upcoming pools.
Rokanuzzaman Rokan, a BNP- backed candidate of Porahati UP and Foyezuddin, an independent, also the rebel candidate of the ruling party of Dogachhi union said, the ruling pay men have been sending unknown and unidentified people to their houses during the night one after another.
The unknown men have been creating pressure not to contest in the polls. It has been hampering the fair campaigns from the BNP and independent candidates as they are feeling unsafe during the campaigns, they said.
An independent candidate of Harisankarpur union parishad Fariduddin alleged, the symbol boat was snatched from him against money. “I am confident enough I will win ignoring all odds”, Farid said.
Masum Babu, the ruling party backed candidate said, he has been conducting campaigns in the area to reach the voters ignoring any threat from any corner. He urged upon the locals administration ensuring free and fair polls.
Officer- in -charge of Jhenaidah Sadar police station Hasan Hafizur Raahman said, the government is in zero tolerance in holding the polls fair and free. Adequate law enforcers including the striking forces and elite forces will be active during the polls to maintain law and order at any cost. Following the political pressure and threat from any corner, the police man said, legal steps will be taken as per the rules if this sort of specific allegation is submitted.
Jahangir Hossain, District Election Officer in Jhenaidah when contacted said, his government was strict holding the union parishad polls free and fair.
The fourth phase elections will be held in eight unions, and, elections in another eight unions will be in next phase, while the election in Surat union parishad under the upazila was suspended following the border related problems of the union, Jahangir Hossain said.
It may be mentioned that elections in eight unions of the upazila in fourth phase, a total of 30 aspirants have been contesting for the position of chairmen, 185 for ward members position and 50 for the reserved female seats.
A total of 123,152 voters both female and male, are going to cast their votes through 85 polling centres in Jhenaidah Sadar on the scheduled date Mat 7.
