Lawacherra Bon O Jibo Boichitro Rokkha Andolon has launched a signature campaign from second day of Eid to raise awareness among the tourists and mass people on saving Lawacherra forest by preventing rampant cutting of trees.
It is mentioned that the Government has planned to cut down 25,000 trees along Dhaka-Sylhet track beside Lawachhara rain forest to facilitate rail communication between Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chiitagong rail routes.
Musaddek Mela, General Secretary , Communist Party of Bangladesh , Srimangal Upazila unit and advisor of Lawacherra Bon O Jibo Boichitro Rokkha Andolon inaugurated the programme on the Lawacherra forest main gate in Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar . The programmes includes rally, discussion meeting.
Mujibur Rahman, Assistant Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Railway in Sylhet told The New Nation on Saturday plying of train through Lawachhara rain forest has turned risky because of trees.
The Bangladesh Railway has sent a letter to Forest Department, Komolganj range with an entreaty to fell about 25,000 trees along rail track in order to make train journey safe.
Joly Paul, Convener of Lawacherra Bon O Jibo Boichitro Rokkha Andolon said we are not against for any development work but that can never be at the cost of destroy forest, because forests sustain life.
Md Nurul Mohmain Milton, General Secretary , Environmentalist Journalist Forum said greenery from the national forest was decreasing day by day due to construction of several roads through the forest. If the trees were fallen down, the forest creature’s life would come to a stake in future.
Abdul Karim Kim, General Secretary , BAPA of Sylhet unit said by visiting the area I have come to know that destruction of the environment. On the other hand, railway plan to cut 25 thousands trees. ‘Stop to Plan chops down Lawacherra reserved forest trees’, he added. In this situation, immediately revoke authorization to cut trees. Otherwise, strict movement program will be announced.
Earlier, on April 9, a letter signed by Md Arman Hossain, divisional engineer of Bangladesh Railway, was sent to Kamalganj forest range office asking the Forest Department to sever trees along rail track of Srimongal-Bhanugachh section’s five kilometre areas.
The letter said train communication on the rail track in the area during summer season turned risky as sometimes trees uprooted by storm laid in the area’s rail track that could lead to a fatal accident anytime.
The letter also mentioned that inter-district Upobon Express Train got struck as about 30 trees laid on rail track after being uprooted by storm on April 21, 2015.
Meanwhile, Lawachara National Park, situated on 1,250 hectare area in Kamalganj of Moulvibazar, is one of the remnants of greens left in this country forests that lives with a rich biodiversity. The forestation of the area that started in 1925 has now taken the form of a natural forest.
Under The Wild Life (Preservation) (Amendment) Act-1974 in 1996, part of the West Bhanugach Reserved Forest was declared “Lawachara National Park,” which encompasses an area of 1250 hectares.
