Call to save Khamarbari lab bldg

Green activists on Saturday urged the government to save the centennial, Traditional laboratory building of Khamarbari in the city.
Poribesh Bachao Andolan (POBA) organised a human chain in front of Khamarbari of Farmgate in this connection and louded to stop the demolishing process of the old laboratory building
immediatly. Besides, they have demanded for rebuilding of the demolished portion of the laboratory building structure and to preserve it as a museum and take adequate leagal action against the destroyer who disobeyed order of the High Court.  
They have asked the government for taking integrated action plan to preserve the traditional buildings, structures of Dhaka and finalise a detail list of such traditional, antique developments for preservation.
Chairman of POBA Abu Naser Khan, Dhaka University Fine Arts Department Dean Professor Nisar Hossain, Architect Mobasher Hossain, Architect Mostofa Khalid Polash, Architect Taimur Islam, Retired Chief Architect of Bangladesh Government ASM Ismail, Artist Monirul Islam, Artist Wakilur Rahman, Architect Sajjadur Rashid, Preservation specialist Dr MA Sayed, Architect Dr Sajid Bin Doja, Urban Planner Jarina Uddin and Chairman of BRAC University Architecture Department Dr Adnan Jillur Morshed, among others, took part in the human chain.
Abu Naser Khan highlighted importance of conserving such heritage of the city both for ecosystem and tradition.
“It will not only destroy the traditional value, but help the destroyers to be more aggressive in future who are destroying country’s heritage,” Abu Naser Khan alarmed.
“We will become a history and heritage free generation if we let demolish such traditional structure, this laboratory building and other centennial structures of the country are important part of our enriched Art, Architectural and Cultural past,” mentioned Professor Nisar Hossain.
“It will be a foolish action if we let demolish all the old and traditional structures of the country in the name of development, such structure resembles our past and connect the future with the earlier generation footprints, we must preserve our traditional developments,” said Architect Mobasher Hossain.
Architect Taimur Islam warned the destroyers saying “We will fight in the High court (HC) as there is active stay order of HC on the demolishing procedure of the laboratory building. The government officials have not tried to conserve the building at all despite the active stay order; we demand immediate legal action against them.”
Speakers have also emphasised on the historical past of the building that were built in early 1909 and resembles the rich Archeological styles of European and Indian architecture with glory and aesthetics.
Moreover, they said that this centennial laboratory building resembles history of our agricultural revolution in the country and culture and it is under process of heritage enlistment. It was made much earlier before of the National Sangsad Bhaban. If such demolishment goes on, our traditional monuments and structures will be vanished from Dhaka City and we will become a rootless nation with no benchmark from past.
POBA and other allied organisation have declared three day-long different programmes to show protest, resist the demolishing process and help conservation of traditional buildings, structures of the city.
