Call to remove land related problems of ethnic group

Speakers at a community level discussion unequivocally called for government and non-government level concerted efforts towards removing the existing land related problems being faced by the plain ethnic minorities.
They viewed infusing dynamism into the legal aid services provided by the government and non-government organizations concerned could be the effective means of attaining desired result in this regard. Proper enforcement of the relevant laws is also important to this end.
The observation came yesterday in an advocacy meeting styled “State Acquisition and Tenancy Act, 1950 Under Section 97: Present Application Situation” held in the conference hall of Gogram Union Parishad Complex under Godagari Upazila in Rajshahi.
Rajshahi Unit of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) organized the meeting in association with Community Legal Services Programme.
During her concept paper presentation Mahbuba Akter, Deputy Director (Advocacy and Communications) of BLAST, said emphasis should be given on ensuring social, political and economic rights of the ethnic minorities. All the government and non-government organizations should come forward and work together to this end.
BLAST unit coordinator Advocate Abdus Samad, UP Chairman Mujibur Rahman, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat. ethnic minority leader Everest Hembrom and BLAST Senior Researcher Advocate Rejaul Karim Siddiqui also spoke.
The meeting discussed ways and means to ensure legal support to the marginalized community.
The watchdogs to protect the vulnerable community also underlined the need for taking up adequate measures to advocate vigorously the existing system of cost-free legal aid services among poor and distressed population to ensure justice for the underprivileged.
They said that all people are equal to the eye of law so emphasis should be given on bringing all the victimised people under the legal aid coverage whatever and whenever they need.
Giving priority to the legal aid related cases is very important in terms of speedy disposal in the greater interest of the distressed and poor justice-seeker litigants.
