BSS, Dhaka :
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Thursday urged all to raise their voice against all forms of discrimination towards women to stop repression on them.
“Women are facing repression as a result of discriminations towards them. So all sorts of discrimination against women should be stopped,” he told a discussion on “Family violence: it is not individual, rather it is political” at the Senate Bhaban of the Dhaka University.
Department of Women and Gender Studies of Dhaka University and Mohila Parishad organized the discussion marking the International Women Repression Prevention Fortnight.
Chairman of Department of Television and Film Studies Prof Dr AGM Shafiqul Alam Bhuiyan, teachers and members of civil society, among others, addressed the discussion with Chairman of the Department of Women and Gender Studies of Dhaka University Tania Haque in the chair.
President of Mohila Parishad Ayesha Khanom presented the keynote paper at the discussion.
Inu said equal rights of men and women have to be established in the society to root out all forms of discriminations. “Repression against women will not be stopped until equal rights of women on property are ensured,” he said.
“Women are being deprived in the society because of mindset problems of their male counterpart. In the male dominated society, women are considered as a sex object,” the information minister said adding women should be given equal opportunities in every sphere of the society for unlocking their potentials to ensure better contribution to the family as well as society.
Recalling the glorious role played by women during the War of Liberation, Inu said women made supreme sacrifices by giving their lives and honour in the War of Liberation in 1971 to free the country from the Pakistani occupation forces.
