BSS, Rajshahi :
Speakers at a review meeting here yesterday mentioned that emphasis should be given on making the uses of solar power more popular to lessen the gradually mounting pressure on electricity.
They also observed that all the government and non-government organizations concerned should work together for building social awareness towards judicious use of fossil fuel and ending its misuse. Irrigation system should be converted into solar power.
District Relief and Disaster Management Office organized the daylong meeting at conference hall of Deputy Commissioner where implementation progress of Solar Power Project here was reviewed elaborately. Rural Infrastructure Renovation and Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Project supported the meeting.
With Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin in the chair, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ataul Gani and District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Aminul Islam addressed the meeting, among others, concerned. Kazi Ashraf Uddin mentioned instead of depending on only the fossil fuel emphasis should be given on enriching the renewable energy sources to face the energy challenges.
Availability of energy from many different sources is vital for the present life to face the challenge of the ever-increasing demand for energy. He emphasized the need for wide-ranging use of energy efficient products to reduce the existing pressure on power demands. He laid stress on using energy efficient electrical appliances to reduce electricity cost coupled with energy conservation which is essential for addressing the energy crises.
Kazi Ashraf viewed that there are many factors like population growth, emerging economics, complex technologies and increasing consumers’ demands that may result in significant increases in demand for all types of energy which in turn may result in environmental changes and pollution. He urged the policy makers and others concerned to come forward to the best uses of the renewable energy sources for the sake of building a better environment.
“It is essential for scientists and researchers to find out the renewable energy resources and effective technologies. Bangladesh is endowed with vast renewable energy resources such as biomass and solar insolation,” he added.
More than 40 people including upazila project implementation officer, sub-assistant engineers and other stakeholders and development activists attended the meeting sharing their views on the issue.
