Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed: Call to free life, society from drug addiction

The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in Barisal on Friday calling to free life and society from drug addiction.
On this occasion, narcotic control directorate in collaboration of ‘Abiskar’, a voluntary orgnisation, organised a children painting competition at Amrita Lal Kindergarten, procession on city roads and discussion and prize giving ceremony at the conference room of the deputy commissioner.
The participants of the programmes expressed their determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of a society free of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The discussion session was presided over by Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner Barisal.
Among others by Md. Gaus, divisional commissioner, Abdullah Al Mamun, additional deputy commissioner, Golam Rouf Khan and Alamgir Hossain, deputy and assistant commissioners of Barisal Metropolitan Police, addressed the programme.
Mizanur Rahman Sharif, assistant director narcotic control directorate Barisal office, Abubakar Siddik Sohel, chairman, non-government organization ‘Abiskar’ addressed and presented key notes on the theme of the day.
The speakers quoting the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said “Efforts against illicit drugs must be connected to our work to promote opportunities through equitable and sustainable development. We must continually strive to make the weak and fragile stronger.”
The speakers also explaining theme of the day in 2015 as ‘lets develop our lives, our communities, our identities without drugs’ reaffirmed that illicit drugs continue to pose a health danger to humanity. That’s why drugs are, and should remain, controlled.
However they also recognized that despite continued and increased efforts by the international community, the world drug problem continues to constitute a serious threat to public health, the safety and well-being of humanity.
Due to expanding drug addiction, particular among young people, the national security and sovereignty of country also became under threat hampering socio-economic and political stability and sustainable development, the speakers told.
Mentionable by resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: The “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” was observed, as part of the global programme, in the Sylhet city in a befitting manner.
To mark the day, local narcotics control department in collaboration with district administration chalked out elaborate programmes.
The programmes, included painting and essay competition projecting the adverse impact of drug abuse and its harmful effect on juveniles and youths, rally and a discussion meeting.
A colourful rally was brought out in the city, which was participated by government officials, NGO representatives, students and different professional bodies to create awareness among the people against drug abuse. A discussion meeting was held at Sylhet Zilla parished Auditorium in this connection with deputy commissioner of Sylhet Md. Joynal Abedin in the chair.
Sylhet Additional Divisional Commissioner Md. Mizanur Rahman addressed the discussion as the chief guest while DIG of Sylhet Mizanur Rahman, Police Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan, Zilla Parished Administrator Motiur Rahman, ASP Nurul Islam attended as special guests.
Deputy director of Sylhet sub-region of Narcotics Department Jahid Hossain Mulla delivered the speech of welcome.
The speakers at the discussion stressed the need for tougher law to curb the drug menace from the society.
They urged the law enforcement agencies to be vigilant against the illegal trafficking of the harmful drugs.
They also stressed the need for inclusion of harmful effect of drugs in the curriculum of text books.
Later, the chief guest distributed prizes among the winners of painting and essay competition.
