Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon said the government will take stern action if quota for mentally challenged people is not followed properly in recruiting manpower in public service.
He came up with the warning on Wednesday at a discussion organised by the Department of Social Service at its auditorium in city’s Agargaon area, marking 13th World Down Syndrome Day.
Chaired by Director General of the Department of Social Services Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir, the discussion was addressed, among others, by former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Dr Pran Gopal Datta and Neuro-development Disability Protection Trust chairman Golam Rabbani.
Menon said the government is working sincerely to bring the mentally challenged people into the mainstream of the society and it was quite successful in creating awareness among people about them.
“We’ll take steps to allocate plots to mentally challenged people in Purbachal, the outskirts of the capital,” he said.
The speakers said ensuring proper care, nursing, education and suitable environment for children are urgent as they have unlimited prospects and strength to address all kind of difficulties.
They underscored the need for taking concerted efforts to uphold the rights of the children with down-syndrome apart from ensuring their health and education.
The speakers urged the authorities concerned to launch a social awareness campaign in this regard.
