Terming the fuel as an integral part of life, discussants at a meeting here unequivocally called for ensuring legitimate rights to fuel to the public in general.
They, however, viewed that citizens’ right to the fuel sector can be ensured through a proper fuel policy as the fuel rights have been transformed into fundamental rights amid the present era of digital Bangladesh.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) hosted the citizens’ view-sharing meeting on its draft fuel policy at Hotel Mukta International in Rajshahi city on Thursday.
CAB Adviser Professor Shamsul Alam addressed the meeting as resource person with its local unit President Kazi Giash in the chair while General Secretary Golam Mostofa Mamun welcomed the participants. Former district adjutant of Ansar-VDP Engineer Khademul Islam, Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Prof Moloy Bhowmik and Prof Abu Bakar from Rajshahi University, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and Director of the Department of National Consumers Rights Protection Apurba Adhikary also spoke disseminating their expertise on the issue.
Prof Shamsul Alam opined substantial and sustainable protection of environment and natural resources together with promotion and use of renewable energies is very important for protecting both climate and life.
Time has come to protect the natural resources including the wetlands and water bodies for restoring the green atmosphere.
Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan told the meeting there is an enormous scope of reducing the gradually mounting pressure on fossil fuel through substantial and sustainable promotion of renewable energies in both rural and urban areas.
He added the issues of renewable energies, mass-awareness on fuel, rights and access of marginalized populations on fuel and climate change should be prioritized.
Prof Sarwar Jahan said emphasis should be given to motivating the public in general for using renewable energies as a whole besides protecting its resources from further destruction.
All the government and non-government organisations concerned should come forward and patronize the sector for its successful promotion for the sake of its existing potential along with building a green environment.
