Call to ensure rights of disabled persons

Socio-political and human rights of the persons with disabilities should be ensured for mainstreaming them in the society through accelerating their development, empowerment and establishing equal rights.
The opinion came at a views-sharing meeting on ‘Sustainable Development Goals: Perspective Rights of Disabled Persons’ organised for members of the Rangpur district committee of the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities.
The Department of Social Services (DSS), ADD International, Rangdhanu Zila Protibondhi Adhikar Sangstha (RZPAS) and Prottyasha Protibondhi Nari O Shishu Unnayan Sangstha organised the meeting yesterday at Raja Ram Mohan Club in Rangpur.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim addressed the meeting as the chief guest. Deputy Director of District DSS and member-secretary of the district committee of the Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Nazmun Nahar presided over the meeting.
President of RZPAS Nur Alam delivered welcome speech in the meeting participated by government officials, representatives of different organisations working for welfare of the disabled people, civil society members, journalists and elite.
District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Parveen, Medical Officer Dr Ruhul Amin, Sub-divisional engineer of the Public Works Department Abdul Mannan, Assistant District Information Officer Alamgir Hossain, Upazila Social Service Officer Joynal Abedin and Inspector Zahidur Rahman addressed.
Programme support officer of ADD Tamzida Zannati Shilpi, its Project Manager Monwarul Islam moderated the meeting. The speakers said a sustainable national uplift is not possible without mainstreaming and turning the people with disabilities into able and worthy human resources through ensuring their equal socio-political and human rights in the society.
Without mainstreaming the physically challenged population with national development activities at all levels through ensuring their human rights as per the concerned UN Convention, sustainable national uplifts could not be attained, they said.
Terming the people with disabilities an integral part of the society, Nazmun Nahar said the disabled people could do the same as the able ones if adequate opportunities were provided to enjoy the basic human rights like others.
The chief guest called upon all concerned for properly implementing various steps taken by the government for ensuring welfare, development and establishing equal rights of the disabled population for their mainstreaming in the society.
