Staff Reporter :
Rights activists at a roundtable called for taking effective steps to eliminate child labour from dried fish sector, which is considered as hazardous work for children, but it has not been placed on list of hazardous sector.
A large number of children are found to be working in the country’s informal sector, such as dried fish (mainly located in coastal belt) in hazardous conditions. Their engagement in such sector may hamper their both physical and mental growth, they said.
They remarked while addressing the event titled ‘Multi stakeholder roundtable meeting of Child Labor Improvements in Bangladesh (CLIMB) advocacy group and relevant stakeholders’ at CIRDAP conference room in the capital on Tuesday.
Stressing on inclusion of the dried fish sector on list of hazardous sector and total elimination of child labour from the society, they said that informal sector should be brought under government monitoring as many children are working in this sector in risky environment.
It needs to take up child-focused poverty and safety-net programmes and allocate adequate resources through child budget. Besides, it is required to arrange vocational skill training for the children, as it would turn them self-reliant in the future, they added.
“Investment in child education and vocational skill training, special micro-credit and asset transfer programme for vulnerable people can also contribute to eradication of child labour”.
Saying that child labour is the obstacle to achieving the goals of our sustainable development, the speakers called for proper coordination between the government and the private sector for ensuring the sustainable development.
INCIDIN Bangladesh and Winrock International jointly organized the programme supported by the US Department of Labour.
Advocate Salma Ali, Co-Chairperson, National Child Labour Monitoring Committee and human rights lawyer, attended the event as the chief guest, chaired by AKM Masud Ali, Executive Director of INCIDIN Bangladesh.
