Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith announced in his budget speech that “in order to ensure collection of the potential of government revenue from this industry, the cable TV network will be brought under a digital addressable system in Dhaka and Chittagong and the surrounding areas within the fiscal year 2017-2018 and in the complete country within June 2019.
Under the current system, the finance minister stated that consumers are being charged Tk 250-300 per cable connection on an average, but the government is not receiving even a nominal amount from that as tax revenue.
The mandatory digitization of cable TV network will bring structure to this scenario, he also added, and, as an example, it should be noted that India and Nepal have already implemented similar policies.
The announcement of mandatory digitization of cable TV network heralds a much-needed change in this industry. With this policy in place, not only can the government enable the flow of revenue but also it enables the country to fast forward towards the numerous benefits of digital cable such as increased number of local and national channels, best quality picture and sound, and interactive, value added services.
