Cabinet okays 2016 public holidays

The Cabinet on Monday approved the proposed list of holidays for the 2016 calendar year with 14 general holidays and eight more by the executive order of the government.
The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said the Public Administration Ministry placed the proposed list in consultation with Bangla Academy, Religious Affairs Ministry and Meteorological Department.
The Cabinet Secretary said, the 14 general holidays will include four weekly holidays while there would be no weekly holidays among the 8 holidays
 to be based on executive orders of the government.
Apart from these 22 days of public holidays, Shafiul Alam said, there will also be three optional holidays for various religious communities of the country.
“Besides, there will be optional holidays on 29th of Chaitra and 2nd of Baishakh for the people living in the Chittagong hill districts marking the ‘Boishabi’ festival of the ethnic minority groups,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary also said there were 23 public holidays in the calendar year 2015, including 11 weekly holidays.
The Cabinet was apprised of the issue of scheduled amendment to some ordinances implementation (special provision) Act, 2013. The ordinances were promulgated between August 15, 1975 and April 9, 1979.
The issue of scheduled amendment to some ordinances implementation (special provision) Act, 2013 was also informed at the meeting. The ordinances were promulgated between March 24 in 1982 and November 11 in 1986. Ministers, state ministers, secretaries concerned attended the meeting.
