Chattogram Bureau :
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Chattogram chapter has demanded a probe into the ongoing development projects of Chittagong WASA by issuing a press statement citing several allegations of failure in delivering services to Chittagong city residents.
The organisation made the demand on Saturday, by issuing a press statement, signed by CAB’s central vice president SM Nazer Hossain, Chittagong divisional secretary Kazi Iqbal Bahar, city president Jesmine Sultana, and secretary Ajay Mitra.
CAB claimed that, the incumbent Managing Director of Chittagong WASA , Engineer AKM Fazlullah, who has been serving Chittagong WASA for the last ten years on contractual basis, could not bring dynamism to the development projects. Despite receiving a whopping Tk 13,000 crore budget allocation for carrying out different development projects, WASA Engineers failed to deliver expected services to the city residents.
The press statement said, though Chittagong WASA claims that its water production capacity is 35 to 40 crore litres of water per day, the claim has no scientific basis, as there is no digital meter to measure water production at the Sheikh Hasina, and Madunaghat Water Treatment Plants, and the pump house.
As a result, there is a huge mismatch in calculating the actual cost of water production. Absence of factual database at Chittagong WASA raises doubts on the credibility of its daily capacity of water production, the press statement said.
Against this backdrop, Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Ministry, Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) of the Ministry of Planning and Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) should launch an investigation into the development projects being implemented by the Chittagong WASA , said the statement.
Factory fined over unhygienic food: A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)on Sunday imposed Tk seven lakhs fine on Fulkoli Bread and Biscuit Industries Limited in Chattogram for preparing and preserving food in an unhygienic condition.
Md Akhtaruzzaman, executive magistrate of RAB Headquarters conducted the court at Rahattarpul area, said Mashkur Rahman, an assistant director (Media) of RAB-7.
Earlier on Saturday, the same court imposed a fine of Tk four lakhs on Banaful and Company and Tk two lakhs on Madhuban Bread and Biscuit Factory for using substandard and rotten ingredients and manufacturing food in an unhygienic condition.
