Chattogram Bureau :
The burn unit of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) is suffering from various crisis including shortage of manpower and ICU. Although 13 years have passed since its running, the unit is still deficient in all respects..
Although it was supposed to be a 100-bed unit, it had to return deficient crores of takas due to space complexity. This unit, which is the last hope of the burnt patients of the entire Chattogram division, seems to be burning like a dim lamp.
Although the capacity is only 26 beds, this unit has 60-70 patients per day. Not only that, the number of doctors is only 5. These doctors have to fight hard to serve such a large number of patients. In addition, due to the crisis in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) crisis, serious patients have to be taken to Dhaka.
It is learned that in 2014, the hospital authorities sent a proposal for a 100-bed specialized burn and plastic surgery department to the ministry. In addition to the 10-bed ICU, the proposal also includes three operating rooms .
Mentionable that , in 2016, the Chinese government came forward to finance for a burn unit project. China also plans to invest Tk. 100 crore to build a burn unit. But China withdrew from funding because the CMCH authority could not provide a place to set up the burn unit.
According to CMC Hospital, the burn unit currently has one associate professor, one assistant professor, one registrar and two assistant registrars. In addition to academic activities, associate and assistant professors also treat patients. But due to the large number of patients, the doctors have to struggle to give proper treatment.
The deputy director of the hospital. Aftabul Islam told media that an initiative has been taken to set up a separate burn and plastic surgery unit long ago. The Ministry of Health also has an agreement with the Chinese government, But work is not going to start due to the complexity of lands .
Aminul Haque Babu, Deputy Governor of the Bangladesh Human Rights Commission, that 10 million people are living in the city. For such a large population, only a 26-bed burn unit is negligible. If we do not take action now, we will have nothing to do but regret if a situation like severe fire tragedy arises like Dhaka or Gazipur. . It is very essential to establish a 100-bed burn unit in the port city.
