Bumper winter vegetables production expected in Rangpur, Sylhet divns

Some 55,066 hectares of land have so far been brought under the farming of winter vegetables in the four districts of Sylhet division.
Bottle gourd, pumpkin, radish, bean, tomato, cucumber, red spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, egg plant and taro are the most popular item in the region this season.
Off the total, some 20,750 hectares of land are in Sylhet, 8,533 hectares in Moulvibazar, 14,500 hectares in Habiganj and 11,283 hectares in Sunamganj district.
In addition to this area, potato has so far been cultivated on 6,946 hectares of land in the division and sweet potato on 1,245 hectares.
Mustard has been cultivated on 6,651 hectares of land, coriander on 2,709 hectares, chilli on 2,767 hectares, mashkalai on 1,164 hectares, French bean is being grown on 3,317 hectares of land, DAE sources added.
DAE officials said a good number of farmers in the region are now involved in commercial cultivation of varieties of vegetables in barren and fallow areas in Golapganj, Biswanath, Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Beanibazar and Kanaighat upazilas.
Additional director of DAE, Sylhet, Md Altabur Rahman said many farmers in the four districts are farming vegetable on commercial basis.
The official said special project like ‘Raising crop intensity in Sylhet division’ is playing an important role in motivating and engaging cultivators with modern methods of agriculture.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Agriculturists of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are expecting a bumper production of winter vegetables in Rangpur agriculture region this season.
“As cultivation of vegetables still continues, its early varieties have appeared in markets in plenty making the farmers happy with lucrative price,” said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE at its regional office Agriculturist Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam.
However, sowing of seed of few varieties of winter vegetables will continue till the next month in all five districts of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts of Rangpur agriculture region.
“The farmers have already brought 34,517 hectares of land under cultivation of winter vegetables against the fixed farming target on 37,729 hectares of land to produce over 7.86-lakh tonnes vegetables this time,” Islam said.
Talking to BSS, Deputy Director of the DAE at its regional office Agriculturist Md Moniruzzaman said cultivation of vegetables during both winter and summer seasons has become popular in recent times bringing mammoth profits to the farmers.
The agriculture related departments, organisations and institutions have taken adequate steps to assist the framers in making the winter vegetables’ farming programme successful.
“The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation and other organisations supplied quality seed, incentives, agri-inputs and provided technical assistance to the farmers,” he said.
Besides, commercial banks, including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank and some NGOs disbursed easy-term agriculture loans among the farmers to make the winter vegetable farming programme a success.
Vegetable seller Hafizur Rahman at Rangpur City Market yesterday told BSS that many varieties of winter vegetables have appeared in the local markets with better price benefiting the farmers.
Meanwhile, vegetables traders are exporting huge quantities of the early varieties of winter vegetables to capital Dhaka city and other parts of the country by trucks from different points in the region.
“Some 900 to 110 trucks loaded with winter vegetables are being sent to the capital city and other places daily from all five districts of Rangpur agriculture region,” vegetable trader Mofizar Rahman at Mithapukur Bazar in Rangpur said.
Farmers Ferdous Hossain and Keramat Ali of Ranipukur village in Mithapukur upazila said they started selling winter vegetables like cauliflower, brinjal, ‘Korola’, ‘Potol’, bean, ‘Jhinga’, ‘Kakrol’, green chili and other crops a month ago.
Farmer Manik Mian of village Najirdigar in Rangpur Sadar expressed satisfaction over current markets price of winter vegetables and said that he also started harvesting early varieties potato to get lucrative price.
Regional Additional Director of DAE Agriculturist Md Shah Alam said the farmers are continuing cultivation of winter vegetables side by side with harvesting the early variety vegetables to earn better profits.
“As cultivation of vegetables has become a profitable venture, its farming is expanding every year following repeated bumper production with lucrative price in recent times changing fortune of many farmers in the region,” Alam added.
