Bumper wheat production expected in Rangpur, Sylhet

The wheat cultivators of the region are delighted as they have been witnessing a congenial weather condition since the very beginning of the season which also made them hopeful about attaining an bumper production of their produce this year.
Farmers of five districts under the zone cultivated wheat on around 31,005 hectares of land this season against the DAE’s target of 24,528 hectares, official sources of DAE said.
The growers are getting more interested in the cultivation of the crop in recent years after getting bumper production repeatedly due to favourable weather conditions, DAE sources said.
Safi Mia (45) of Dangapara village under Taraganj Upazila in Rangpur district said, Tk 1200 to 1500 is required to cultivate the crop on one bigha of land. He cultivated the crop two bighas of land this year and is hopeful of getting a bumper production, he also said.  
Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur zulfikar Haider said sufficient water supply, agri-inputs and conducive weather condition enhanced wheat cultivation in the region this year, making the farmers optimistic of a good output of the crop.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: The farmers are expecting bumper wheat production in the Sylhet district this season.
The plants in the fields are already in full bloom.
According to field sources, timely plantation of seeds accompanied by the current cold spell has been the main reason for possible bumper production of the cash crop.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sylhet office sources said, the cultivation of wheat has already exceeded the farming target. The farmers have cultivated wheat on 3,000 hectares of land against the fixed target of 2,000 hectares of land.
Sala Uddin, DD of BADC Sylhet said the farmers have been showing more interest in farming wheat after getting repeated bumper production and fair price in recent years.
He said, necessary training, assistance, inputs, quality seeds, technologies and agri-loans have been provided to the farmers for making wheat farming programme a success.
