About 1, 50000 tonnes of summer vegetables is expected to be produced in the district during the current season due to favourable weather condition. Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Lotapat
Hossain told BSS today that if the favorable weather condition prevails in the couple of weeks, the above mentioned production could be achieved that is expected to break all of its previous record.
He said some 8,550 hectares of land have been brought under summer vegetables cultivation in six upazilas of the district in the current season against 7880 hectares last year.
The deputy director said the department encouraged the farmers to cultivate chemical free vegetables and imparted knowledge on the bad effects of using pesticides and chemical fertilizers on vegetables fields and also gave themtraining on pest management.
He also said the DAE has set a target to cultivate poison free vegetableson 1,200 hectares of land in the district.
The farmers are now producing poison free vegetables using organicfertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers and poisonous pesticides.

Rice price shows downtrend
Prices of rice have marked downtrend with the huge supply of Boro rice in the markets of the district.
Traders at Narsingdi district town told BSS that the prices of all kinds of rice have come down with adequate supply of rice in the markets.
Course rice is being sold at Taka 36 to 38 per kg against TK 40 to 42 per kg a month ago, middle variety at TK 42 to 44 per kg and fine quality of rice at Tk 52 to 56 now.
