The farmers of Rasulpur, Tangabo, CharAlgi and Datterbazar Union of Gafargaon Upazila under Mymensingh have brought about a revolutionary change in agriculture by cultivating cucumber.
Cucumber fields are filled with green in the meadows of these areas. Not only the farmers but also the villagers are charmed with the unique beauty of cucumber in the sandy -bed. Even the passers-by are also getting stopped to see the wonderful scenery of the cucumber fields. The greens are pageant in these unions now. The villages of these unions are decorated with the green crops.
Cucumber is being produced largely at Rasulpur, Choyani Rasulpur, Vorvora village, bakhali, Bashia, Tangabo village of Tangabo union, Baluakanda, Joyarchar, CharAlgi village of CharAlgi Union,and the remote areas of Datterbazar Union under Gafargaon Upazila. Meeting up the demand of these areas ,cucumber is being exported in various places including the capital city Dhaka. The Agriculture labourers are getting much profit by cultivating cucumber taking lease land. The wages of labourers are also increasing day by day.
To cultivate cucumber , the field is prepared by digging small canal and pile at least one month before Ramadan in every year. Later, Urea, TSP, Mp fertilizer is used in the water of these canals. In the same way, piles are mixed with fertilizer. After that seeds are sowed in the fields. Cucumber is taken within 30 days after seedling. Alam Mea a cucumber farmer of Vorvora village said, Cucumber is the crop of winter season. But hi-breed cucumber is cultivated at any season ,at any time. The rainy season is the proper time for cucumber cultivation.
Cucumber has been cultivated more 2 hectares lands in the district in current season.
Yusuf Mea farmer of Choyani Rasulpur village has cultivated 56 decimal land. He has spent TK- 20 thousand and has sold cucumber Tk 45 thousand to the whole saler. He hopes that he would sell Tk 35 thousand the rest at least. Aminul Islam , man of Vorvora village has cultivated 60 decimel land and has spent TK-25 thousand. He has sold Cucumber Tk 50 thousand . He would sell cucumber TK- 40/50 thousand the rest at least. Besides, Abul Kalam, 70 decimel, Azam- 49 decimal, Tafazzal Hussain- 60 decimal, at Rasulpur village, Bulbul – 56 decimal, Akram-42 decimal, Rafiqulo Islam 120 decimel, Abul Hussain-70 decimal Kaium Bapari- 90 decimal of Choyani Rasulpur village have cultivated cucumber in their fields. Besides this, more than one hundred farmers of these union , 200 farmers of CharAlgi Tangabo Union and Datterbazar have cultivate cucumber in their fields.
Upazila Agriculture Officer SS Farhana Hussain said, cucumber has become bumper production in these unions in this year.
