Farmers of all six unions of Dupchanchia upazila under Bogra district are expecting bumper potato productionin this current season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-impute. The farmers have exceeded the fixed cultivation target by 97 per cent in Bogra agriculture region this season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a target of producing 1 lakh tons of potato has been fixed from 12000 hectares of land during this current Rabi season. The farmers have cultivated the crop taking logistic support from local agriculture offices, DAE added.
Horticulture specialist of the DAE Hossain ali said that the farmers completed sowing of potato seed and tender plants of the crop were growing superbly amid favourable climatic conditions. The farmers are also now happy getting lucrative market price of their newly harvested early variety of potatoes between Taka 25 and 30 per kilogram depending on varieties in the beginning of the season, he said.
“Officials and experts of the agriculture-related organisations have been providing necessary suggestions and technologies to the farmers in properly nursing their potato fields facing the current cold wave situation.” said, farmer Golam Rabbany. He again said, “Talking to the correspondent suggested for setting up of adequate preservation facilities and potato-based agriculture industries side by side with enhancing exports to make potato cultivation more profitable for the farmers.” Lokman Ali, a farmer of Gunaher villagage under Dupchanchia upazila said that they cultivated early variety potatoes after harvesting short duration T-Aman paddy to harvest and sell those at fair price.
The DAE and other agriculture related departments and organisations provided quality potato seed and other inputs to farmers to make potato cultivation programme successful, he added.
Upazila agriculture officer Golam Rabbany said potato cultivation has been increasing every year benefiting the farmers as well as the poor section of the society making them self-reliant and improving their livelihoods. We are taking care of potato filed providing all sort of logistic support, he added.
