Bumper ladies finger makes farmers happy in Rangpur

Cultivation of ladies finger has brought smiles on the faces of the farmers in different upazilas under Rangpur district as they are achieving handsome profit through its cultivation during the current season.
Harvesting of the vegetable is going on in full swing across district and the farmers are jubilant to get good yield as well as fair prices of their produce. Nurul haq(45), a farmer of Chowdhurypara village under Taraganj Upazila said he brought one bigha of land under cultivation of okra this season and have earned Tk 15,000 so far. He is hopeful of earning more dividends during the remaining part of the season. Many farmers of the upazila and other parts of the district have become able to overcome the curse of poverty by growing different varieties of vegetables including okra, he added.
Motaleb (50) of Jumakhanpara village under Mithapukur upazila said, “I cultivated Okra on my farmlands this season instead of other crops as the low price of paddy disheartened me last season,” he said. He has also got excellent output of the produce.
Besides, okra is also being grown abundantly at different areas of the region by using eco-friendly pheromone trap instead of harmful pesticide.
“We do not use any insecticide to produce okra and other vegetables. Instead we use pheromone trap. Such vegetables are healthy, tasty and more nutritious,” Motahar (48) of the same area told the new nation .
A number of farmers said it was difficult for them to afford the expenses of their family by growing paddy only but cultivation of okra and some other vegetables is now giving them more profit as result their financial condition is improving significantly, they added.
