Bumper production of jute has brought smile on the face of farmers in the district current season.
 Latafot Hossain, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said , in this year target was fixed to cultivate a total of 3732 hectares of land but the farmers brought additional 3627 hectares of under cultivation this season as they got good price of their produce last year.
Of the total land, farmers cultivated Tosha and variety of Jute of 1976 hectares of land while local variety on 1631 hectares.
DAE office expected that 36203 bales of Jute will be produced this year against the target of 37203 bales. Farmers are now busy to cut jute and rot it. DAE Deputy director Latafot Hossain said if farmers rot Jute using ribbon rating method they will get high quality Jute fiber.
A total of 445 machines were distributed among farmers of the district to rot Jute using the newly introduced method.
This year they got high yield due to favourable weather condition, farmers Abul Kalam and Kashem Miah of sadar upazila said per maund of Jute is being sold between |Tk 1500 and Tk 2000 in the local market though farmers are expecting higher price of Jute.
BSS from Netrakona adds: Harvest of jute in ten upazilas of the district during the current season is nearing completion.
The district is widely known as “huge jute producing region” of the country. The Jute growers are now expecting satisfactory output as they are getting better yielding rates.
Jute cultivators are not facing any problem or barriers for rotting their jute plants as all the natural water bodies including canals, beels, rivers and haors in the district are now full of waters due to widespread rainfall.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said, a total of 4,873 hectors of land were brought under the cultivation in the district with the production target of 47,000 bales of jute.
Of the total, 878 hectors of land were brought under capsularies variety of jute, 318 hectors under olitorious variety, 3,147 hectors under kenaf variety and 530 hectors of land under mesta variety of jute.
Deputy Director of DAE Bilash Chandra Paul said many farmers of the district shown their keen interest for cultivating jute in their farm lands including all the fellow lands this year as the government took different jute cultivators- friendly programmes to inspire the cultivators.
Under the programmes, the government took necessary steps to ensure supply of quality seeds and fertilizers to the door-steps of the growers and provided them with financial and logistic supports, he said.
Apart from this, the crops specialists of the DAE rendered field-level service to the cultivators to let them know about the modern methods of the farming to achieve best output by reducing the production costs.
