Bumper banana production in Khagrachhari

Farmers here are happy as they achieved bumper production of banana this year due to favourable weather and fertile land.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Khagrachhari office sources said, a total of 3,253 hectares of hilly land in nine upazilas of the district have been brought under banana farming this year. From per hectare, farmers are getting 17.6 metric tons of bananas this year which was 14 metric tons last year. After meeting the local demands, buyers take the bananas to other districts of the country.
While talked with this correspondent Abu Taher, a farmer of Gumti Bazaar under Matiranga upazila of the district said they have got expected yield of banana, but the price is not satisfactory.
Jhimi Chakma of Latiban village under Panchhari upazila here said he is counting losses as he didn’t get expected price. A stem consisting 100 bananas is selling at Tk 80-90 only in local markets.
Mongshaprue Marma of Lakpaindong under Manikchhari upazila alleged that despite the huge production of banana this year, farmers are not getting expected price.
Jony Dash, a farmer of Babuchhara area under Dighinala upazila alleged that farmers are counting losses due to lack of proper marketing policy. As a result, middlemen are making extra profits depriving them of the fair price. He urged the government to take proper steps for marketing banana for the sake of the farmers.
While talking with this correspondent, Deputy Director of DAE here Jugal Pado Dey admitted that famers are counting losses despite bumper production of banana this year. Moreover, they had to count extra transport fares.
Farmers will make much profit if fruit-based industry is set up here, he opined.
