Staff Reporter :
A workers’ organization has demanded budgetary allocation of food rationing and housing facilities for the readymade garment workers in recognition of their contribution to Bangladesh’s economy.
Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre raised the demand from a rally in front of the National Press Club yesterday (Friday).
The group’s President Montu Ghosh said, though the apparel workers work hard and contribute immensely to the national economy, they do not get rich food and house to live in.
“The government needs to address these issues for the sake of the national development,” he said.
He said there was no allocation for apparel workers in the budget in the past although they earn about 80 percent of the country’s export earnings.
The platform’s Vice-President Mahbub Alam said that the garment workers were living in uncertainty since those responsible for
the death of workers in the incidents of fire and building collapse in the apparel units went unpunished.
This only encouraged the offenders, he observed.
He demanded that the mysteries behind the killings of garment workers in their workplaces should be unearthed and those responsible be handed appropriate punishment.
