Budget to help boost economy but should be more pro-people and realistic

The lawmakers in the house Wednesday said the proposed budget for fiscal 2017-2018 would help boost the national economy and would help earn US$ 5 billion and provide employment of 20 lakh youths by 2021.
Participating in the general discussion on national budget for sixth day in the house, State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak said the government has increased 218 per cent budget allocation for the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) sector.
The government has allocated Taka 3974 crore in the proposed budget of 2017-18 fiscal while it was Taka 1815 crore in the previous 2016-17 fiscal for ICT.
In addition to this, the proposed budget has also reduced import duty on 94 raw materials as the initiative in the proposed budget would help to flourish the ICT sector in the country, he said in the parliament.
Palak told the house that the proposed budget has paved the way to increase the foreign investment in the digital sector of the country.
Taking part in the budget discussion, State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Sikder said Bangladesh has incurred enormous development in the sports sector.
Due to initiative of the present government, Bangladesh has developed in cricket, Sikder said, adding that Bangladesh has gone to a different height in cricket after defeating New Zealand.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) lawmaker Shirin Akhter called for making the national budget more pro-poor by exempting excise duty on their bank accounts and putting in place an effective tax regime and wealth tax.
Treasury bench members-Shafiul Islam Shimul, BM Mozammel Haque, Tanvir Imam, Mahmud-us-Samad Chowdhury, Habib-e Millat, Taluder Mohammad Yunus, Mizanur Rahman, Shawpan Bhattachariya, Advocate Navana Akhter, Advocate Rezaul Haque Chowdhury, M Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Jatiya Party lawmakers Nurul Islam Milon and Yahiya Chowdhury and Workers Party Lawmaker Sheikh Hafizur Rahman also took part in the general discussion.
Terming the budget as women friendly, lawmakers said the proposed budget has allocated Taka 1,12,000 crore for women development which was one and half fold more than the budget of Taka 69,740 crore placed by Khaleda Zia led BNP government in 2006-07.
