Buddha Purnima celebrated

Buddha Purnima, the biggest religious festival of the Buddhist community, was celebrated yesterday in the capital and elsewhere across the country.
To mark the day in a befitting manner, country’s Buddhist community chalked out various programmes including colorful processions and discussions. According to Buddhism, the emergence of Lord Buddha took place on this day 2,559 years ago. Lord Buddha was born on the full moon day of the month of Baishakh in 563 BC (Before Christ), attained supreme
enlightenment and passed away on the same day. Buddha means “enlightened one” – someone who is completely free from all faults and mental obstructions.
Reverentially, the most important day for the followers of Buddhism, commemorates three important events – Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and also his attainment of the highest spiritual goals, ‘Nirvana’ respectively in Bodh Gaya and ‘Parinirvana’ (final cessation) in Kushinagara of India . President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages on the eve of the day, greeted members of the Buddhist community as well as the countrymen. Abdul Hamid also exchanged views with the representatives of Buddhist community at the Bangabhaban here yesterday afternoon. Rashida Khanam, wife of the President, and Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matiur Rahman were also present. Besides, leaders of different political and socio-cultural organizations also greeted the people of the Buddhist community on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. Decorating the temple and area around with colorful Buddhist flags, the morning prayer, colorful procession of the monks, worship with large offerings, and blood donation took place on the occasion.
As part of marking the day in befitting manner, prayers, sermons and non-stop recitations of Buddhist scriptures resonated in all monasteries, religious halls and homes. On this day, the Buddhists bathed and wore only white clothes. People offered incense, flowers, candles and fruits to the statue of Lord Buddha. They spent their entire day listening to discourses on the life and teachings of the Buddha. The day was a public holiday.
On the occasion, newspapers published different articles while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television (BTV) and private TV channels broadcast special programmes highlighting the significance of the day. The celebrations started with lighting of lamps and hoisting of the national and religious flags atop the Mohabihar and chanting of sacred verses from their religious book Tripitaka. As part of the day’s programme, people of the Buddhist community brought out a colourful procession from Sabujbagh Dharmarajika Buddhist Monastery and ended on Mugda Stadium premises parading the main thoroughfares in the capital at about 8 am.
Bangladesh Buddhist Federation (BBF) organised a day-long programme at Sabujbagh Dharmarajika Buddha Mahabihar in the city. The programmes include: Puja and Sanghadan and discussion. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was present as the chief guest in the discussion with Buddhist religious leader Dr Dharmasen Mohathera in the chair. The religious meeting was followed by a cultural function.
On the occasion, Bangladesh Buddhist Samity (BBS) also held a discussion at Buddhist temple in city’s Uttara where State Minister for Local Government, Rural development and Cooperatives Moshiur Rahman Ranga was present as the chief guest. President of the Samity Dipal Chandra Barua and General Secretary Swapan Barua Chowdhury, among others, spoke. Besides, another discussion was held at Sabujbagh Buddhist temple in the afternoon. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, was present as the chief guest with Shudhanandha Mohathera in the chair.
In Khagrachari, members of the Buddhist community celebrated their most sacred and largest festival Buddha Purnima in the city and elsewhere in the district with traditional enthusiasm and sublime devotion. A colorful procession was bought out from city’s Mahajan Para area. The Buddhist devotees also offered fruits, flowers, candles etc to statues of Lord Buddha throughout the day.
