Bangladesh Shipping Corporation is set to include six new ships in its fleet at a cost of Tk1,843 crore.
According to a press release, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) said the new ships would join the existing fleet by 2018.
The ships would be bought from China National Import and Export Machinery Corporation (CMC), the press release said.
BSC has so far procured a total of 38 ships since 1972. There are three ships
only with BSC, including a container and two lighter tankers, the press release added.
“Each ship will have 39,000 tonnes of capacity. The six ships – three oil tankers and three bulk carriers – will be added with Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) by 2018.” Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan confirmed this after returning home from China last night.
A three-member delegation led by the Minister went to China on May 15 to join the plate cutting ceremony of the ships there, the press release added.
The other members of the delegation were Additional Secretary of the Shipping Ministry M Abdul Kuddus Khan and Executive Director (Technical) of BSC M Sayed Ullah.
Of the total procurement cost, Taka 1,448 crore will be paid by the Chinese government as loan while the remaining amount will be borne by the BSC. The three oil tankers would be used for transporting imported and refined petroleum of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and the bulk carriers would be used for carrying coal for power stations, including fertilizer and other materials.
