Baridhara Society (BS), an association of home owners of the locality, has adopted a comprehensive strategy for sustainable waste management to keep the environment toxin-free.
The society has already started a house-to-house kitchen trash collection programme to make the neighborhood more livable, sources said.
Along with massive awareness campaign, the society has adopted methods of waste reduction, reuse and recycling as part of its new community solid waste management strategy.
After holding of a successful information fair on ‘Household Solid Waste Management and Recycling’ on December 20 last year, the society started a door-to-door campaign to inform and motivate all residents of Baridhara with the support of the Value for Waste (Household Solid Waste Management) Project of Swisscontact.
To facilitate recycling of waste in Baridhara, the households are being provided with one green bin for compostable organics, one yellow plastic bag for inorganic recyclables, three disposable red paper bags for hazardous waste, and one blue bin for the remaining mixed waste.
The Society and the Value for Waste, with the support of RFL Limited, are also
distributing four larger containers for waste to be kept separately at the building level.
According to a field survey, Baridhara, one of the posh areas in the capital, is generating 3,300 kilograms of waste every day. Of which, kitchen waste alone is 2,343kg.
“The approach focuses on keeping the value of recyclables intact by raising awareness and facilitating source segregation of different types of waste and recyclables in households and insuring that separate collection takes place in an efficient and safe way,” an official of the Value for Waste Project, told The New Nation yesterday.
He said that the Baridhara Residential Area was chosen as a first implementation area for the project as the Executive and Civic Amenities Committees of Baridhara Society showed strong willingness, commitment and capacity to further improve their existing waste management system.
“After successful implementation of the project, it would become a learning model for other neighborhoods also,” he noted. The official further said the project would further develop and implement in various other neighborhoods of Dhaka soon.
