The country’s transport sector is on total disarray. Killing of people by unlicensed and untrained drivers has become a common phenomenon. Even yesterday, at least seven people were killed and eight sustained injuries in road accidents in Barishal and Magura. Of them, six passengers of a three-wheeler died in Barishal while five others sustained injuries in another road accident on Barishal-Banaripara highway. Besides, 13 other people including, three students and madrasa teacher, were killed and four others injured in a series of road accidents in Sirajganj, Khulna, Brahmanbaria and Narsingdi districts on Thursday.
We can’t understand why the old traditions and rules are still going on in the road transport sector despite repeated warnings by the government high-ups. Is the transport mafias are more powerful than the government administration? The Jabal-e Noor Paribahan has got permission for plying its buses on road though its route permit was cancelled after killing two students of Shaheed Ramijuddin Cantonment School and College. Undoubtedly this is the bright example of mismanagement and corruption in the transport sector.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner on Thursday said that police and road authorities have failed to maintain road discipline, and they cannot deny this responsibility. The DMP Chief admitted that there are rundown-vehicles plying the streets which are almost broken down and are not fit to be operated.
We know there are separate administrative departments to check the fitness of vehicles, driving license, route permit and others. These are the most important tasks of these departments to ensure public safety and maintaining order in the transport sector. But what we see that, they have constantly failed to do it. If they were on the right track, then the bus that killed two students would not have been on the road even after cancellation of route permit, or Supravat which is responsible for killing another student four days ago would not get ready to operate under a new banner, Samrat; or the fake drivers could not get chance to ply unfit vehicles at all.
When the main law enforcing official expresses his frustration and inability about the disorderly road transport sector; at that time anyone can easily understand how the actual condition of the ordinary people is. There is no way except implementation of law without any fear or favour.
