Md Mosabbir Ali, Kulaura :
A bridge built 21 years ago over a Bogolkuri Canal at Chilarkandi village in Moulvibazar’s Kulaura upazila is of no use to the villagers as it does not have approach road.
According to LGED Office in Kulaura Upazila, the 12 meter long and 6-foot wide bridge was constructed by LGED on Bhuksimoil-Kadipur road in 1997 to improve ease of transport for the people of around 30 villages. The cost of construction of this bridge was estimated to be 3 lakhs 8 thousands taka.
But the approach road was not made 21 years years after its construction. The bridge has been lying unused since then, locals said. Syed Mahfuz Hamid, a resident of Karera village and founder of Kulaura problem and prospect organization, said thousands of people, including school and college students from nearby villages, suffered from the lack of an approach road.
People not use this bridge for single day. In the dry season, people walk across under the bridge, but in the rainy season they have to use inconvenient alternate roads, he added. People from several villages, including Bhuksimoil, Chilarkandi, Borodol, Karera, Kadipur and Chokapon used the road earlier for easy connection to Kulaura upazila, locals said.
Azizur Rahman Monir, chairman of Bhuksimoil Union Parishad said he tried to get funds for different projects in the union, but failed to manage it for the last few years.
“I raised the issue at the monthly coordination meeting of the upazila administration many times, but to no avail,” he added. Ranjan Das, a resident of Chilarkandi village said, around 1,000 students, mostly girls of them from different villages use the road under the bridge to reach their institution in the dry season. But in the rainy season they have to walk two or three kilometers more. He urged the authorities concerned to rebuild the approach roads of the bridge immediately.
Md. Istiak Hasan, Deputy Assistant Engineer of LGED in Kulaura Upazila, said that the bridge seems untenable due to the lack of roads. Building roads will seem important. We are not doing it fill up soil for raod construction. Project Implementation Office will make it.
Kulaura Upazila Parishad Chairman ASM Kamrul Islam told this correspondent that the allocations received from the Upazila Parishad are provided to the Unions every year.
There are opportunities to repair the public roads from the Union Parishad, through the maintenance and development program of rural infrastructure (Kabikha and Khabita). He said he was aware of the problem. The administration would take immediate steps to solve the problem.
