UNB, Sunamganj :
Local residents have been suffering a lot in Badaghat union, a commercially busy place in Tahirpur upazila, for absence of a bridge over the Miarchar River on Badaghat-Sunamganj road.
People, including school and college students, employees of different government and non-government offices, businessmen and patients have to cross the river by boat, putting their life in danger.
Besides, bicycles, motorcycles, push carts and vans are seen crossing the river by boat amid high risk.
People of 30 villages under Badaghat union of Tahirpur upazila and a part of Bishambhorpur upazila have to depend on Badaghat-Sunamganj road for communication, said Kamrul Islam, chairman of Tahirpur upazila.
People from all walks of life have to use the road for going to Badaghat Bazar to perform their day-to-day activities.
There are one family welfare centre, 7-8 primary schools, one secondary school, one madrasa and a college in the union.
Over 800-900 students studying in these institutions have to face risk while going to their institutions through the river.
Besides, vegetable growers and farmers cannot get profit from sale of their goods because of the poor communication system in the district headquarters, Bishambhorpur Bazar, Tahirpur sadar headquarters and Badaghat Bazar.
The lease holder of the jetty takes Tk5 from each person for crossing the river Tk20 from a motorcycle and Tk 30 from a van.
The people of the upazila have long been raising a demand to the local administration for construction of a bridge over the Miachar River, but their plead goes unheeded.
Badaghat Bazar Banik Samity president Selim Haider said the local administration has to take necessary steps to construct a bridge over the river immediately.
