A small bridge on the old Brahmaputra at Borakhali village in Charalgi union of Gafargaon, Mymensingh collapsed on Tuesday evening less than a year after it was built.
The bridge was constructed by the Disaster Management Department on a small river in the old Brahmaputra on the Hajipur Bazar road in Hossainpur upazila of Nayapara-Kishoreganj district in the Charalgi union of the upazila. The bridge was constructed at a cost of about Tk. The office of the Upazila Project Implementation Officer supervises the construction of the bridge. According to the locals, the construction work of the bridge was completed a year ago after the scheduled time.
Going to the ground, it can be seen that hundreds of people have gathered in despair of the work of their broken bridge. Although built a year ago, the bridge has no nameplate. At least 25/26 residents of the area, including Abdur Razzak (62) of Borkhali village in Gafargaon upazila and Abdul Khaleq (63) of Hatralgi village in Hossainpur upazila, said hundreds of people from 6/7 villages in Gafargaon, Hossainpur and Nandail upazila complex cross the small river by dinghy every day. They complained that substandard construction materials were used during the construction of the bridge and the work was not done as per the schedule. “We have repeatedly complained to the authorities about this,” they said. The bridge collapsed in a year due to low quality work. If the bridge is not rebuilt here on an emergency basis, they will have to suffer again.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Sanwar Hossain said action would be taken after investigation.
