Barishal SBMCH upgraded to 1000-bed but running with only 500

Medicare facilities have been severely hampered in Barisal region as Barishal Sher -E- Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) upgraded to thousand-bed half- decade ago but it is running with huge vacancy of former five-hundred bed structures.
 SBMCH, the biggest and only specialized health service providers in the region, started functioning in 1968 as a 325-bed hospital and will observe half-centenary on next month.
After up-gradations in different stages it became 500-bed in 2000 and 1000-bed hospital in 2013.
However the hospital still running with the infrastructure and posts sanctioned for 500-bed even with huge vacancies sanctioned for that.
Office of the director of SBMCH said 99 out of 224 posts of physicians sanctioned for 500-bed hospital lying vacant since long days.
The vacant posts included 18 registers, 37 assistant registers, 3 clinical pathologists, 5 emergency medical officers, 1 junior dental consultant, 4 anesthetists, 4 indoor medical officers, 27 outdoor medical officers of radiology, radiotherapy, surgery, deontology, hematology departments.
Dr. Baqir Hossain, director SBMCH acknowledging the facts said not only the number of physicians, but huge number of vacancies of nurses, employees. technicians making difficulties in providing proper and standard health services to daily average 2500 outdoor and 1300 indoor patients.
So to run the 1000-bed hospital with the about forty-five percent vacant manpower sanctioned for the 500-bed, we have to depend on 250 intern doctors to tackle the situation anyhow, the SBMCH director said.
We regularly writing letters to the ministry and directorate for sanctioning posts increasing manpower according to the upgraded-bed capacities, which yet not gave any result, he added .
