Brahmaputra River erosion takes serious turn in Gaibandha

With the rise of water level in the river of Brahmaputra, erosion has taken serious turn at different places along the river bank of Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas in the district very recently creating untold sufferings to the victims.
Due to the rise of the water level the river intensified its erosion at Kanchipara, Ratanpur, Singria, Namapara, char Khatiamari and Kamarpara of Fulchhari upazila and Gobindipur, Bashhata, Munshirhat and Sathalia of Shaghata upazila last few days making river basin people more worried about their homestead and arable land.
More than 200 families living on the bank of the rivers have already lost their home due to unabated erosion and vast tracts of arable land and academic and religious institutions were also devoured by the rivers, the locals said.
Besides, a good number of academic institutions, temples, mosques and hats and bazaars including flood control embankment are under threat as the rivers are coming fast to them day by day.
Apart from it, hundreds of families living on the river bank are in serious panic and anxiety as their homesteads including the standing crops land might be eroded any time, said Mosarrof Hossain Sweet, chairman of Shaghata union parishad.
Meanwhile, the homeless people who had taken shelter at nearby government embankment and other safer places of the upazilas were passing their days with hardship under open sky for want of drinking water and food, he also said.
M. Habibur Rahman, chairman of Fulchhari upazila, said the river erosion was continuing there and at least 200 homesteads including 500 acres of arable land of the upazilas were devoured by the river of Brahmaputra in last a week.
When contacted, executive engineer of BWDB Prokash Krishna Sarker admitted the erosion at small scale in some places of the upazilas and said after getting required fund they would start development work to protect the river bank from the erosion.
However, the people urged the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to start the river bank protection work at the vulnerable areas without delay to save the homesteads and arable land from the erosion.
