BRAC University has reinstated its law teacher Farhaan Uddin Ahmed, who was allegedly assaulted by officials after termination that angered students. The private university said in a statement on Saturday that actions were taken against the officials accused of assaulting the teacher. Registrar Muhammad Sahool Afzal has gone on ‘long’ leave while assistant registrar Mahi Uddin and senior officer Jabed Rasel have resigned.
Following a complaint filed by a student, the university formed a committee to investigate alleged assaults on female students by security guards, according to the statement.
“The university expects all stakeholders to fully cooperate in returning academic affairs to normalcy as soon as possible, so as not to hamper the academic progress of students,” the statement reads.
Since law teacher Farhaan Uddin Ahmed was allegedly assaulted by Afzal and several other officials on Jul 31, the university in Dhaka’s Mohakhali has been in total disarray with the students clamouring for justice.
In another development, several students started a hunger strike on Thursday demanding punishment to the security guards who reportedly attacked them during protests on Tuesday.
The students postponed the hunger strike and other protests after the authorities assured them of investigations.
The students, however, resumed the protests demanding withdrawal of the registrar on Friday.
Earlier, on Sunday, the students announced a boycott of classes and exams. The university authorities, facing protests, also cancelled classes for Wednesday and Thursday.
