Brac is now operating 10 fixed health centres and 50 mobile health centres in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar for the distressed people from the Rakhaine state of Myanmar.
So far, 109,621 people have taken services from these centres.
Also 45 community health workers from Brac have participated in the training on oral cholera vaccination conducted by UNICEF.
Besides these activities, floor mats have been distributed to 16,333 families till October 7, Brac said on Sunday.
Brac Health, Nutrition and Population Programme director Dr Kaosar Afsana said, “We are trying our best to provide healthcare and treatment to the sick people, the pregnant mothers in particular. But increasing number of patients coming for treatment is a challenge in this regard.”
The overall healthcare facilities provided by different organisations to these distressed people are not sufficient compared with the great number of patients. Risks for both mother and baby will further increase if this situation continues. A greater and broader coordinated initiative from the government and non-governmental agencies is the need of the moment.”
Till Saturday, Brac distributed new clothes to 68,875 children. It has opened 56 child-friendly spaces where children are able to pass time playing games, telling stories and doing other entertainment and learning activities.
Brac’s programme in this regard is covering three areas, namely emergency healthcare focusing on women and children, ensuring potable water and sanitation through installing tube-wells and latrines and supplying hygienic materials, and ensuring protection of children through creating safe spaces.
These activities are going on in coordination with and with assistance from International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Unicef, World Food Programme (WFP), AusAid, DFID and Global Fund.
Brac’s senior management officials are making regular inspection visits in Ukhia and Teknaf.
