The pilgrims and Hajj agencies of the country on Wednesday urged the government to reduce plane fare for the Hajj pilgrims from Tk 1.40 lakh immediately to fix hajj package for this year.
“The plane fare for the Umrah pilgrims is now only Tk 45,000 to 48,000 for two ways. But, the Civil Aviation Ministry has fixed the plane fare at Tk 1.40 lakh by increasing the fare three times. It’s illegal, unethical and torturous for the pilgrims,” said Bangladesh Pilgrims and Hajji Welfare Council (BPHWC) President Dr Abullah Al Naser.
He was speaking at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity auditorium in the capital.
Hajj Agencies Association of Bangladesh’s (HAAB) former president Abdus Sobhan Bhuiyan Hasan, former secretary general of Association of Travel Agencies of Bangladesh (ATAB) Aslam Khan, Welfare Council’s vice president Bashir Ahmed, general secretary Abdul Baten, former HAAB leader Ruhul Amin Mintu and Rafiqul Islam were also present at the press conference.
Naser said that if the government takes one lakh taka for plane fare, it would be 52,000 higher than the actual fare and that is why the Religious Affairs Ministry wants to reduce the fare.
Due to refixation of the plane fare, the finalization of Hajj package is remained stuck, he added.
Terming the plane fare as illegal, unethical and torturous for the pilgrims, the BPHWC president said, “Some 1,37,198 pilgrims will perform Hajj this year and along with the Biman, the Saudi Arabian Airline will carry the pilgrims and the new plane fare will help to launder over Tk 356 crore.”
“No loyal citizen wants to allow anyone to launder such big amount in the name of plane fare,” he added.
He threatened for tougher movement including demonstration with ‘white shroud clothes’ if the government does not reduce the fare price.
The government should allow the Middle East based airlines to carry Hajj pilgrims, provide ticketing facilities and to prevent Hajj tickets syndicate, he urged.
