The pro-ruling party Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad (BAAP) has announced to boycott public programmes of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha with an intention to corner him against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between the government and the judiciary.
All the programmes where the CJ will be present as the Chief Guest will be boycotted, said member-secretary of BAAP Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapos while addressing a protest rally at the south hall of Supreme Court Bar Association in the city on Thursday. “We’re holding protest rallies for the sixth
consecutive days. Today (Thursday) is the final day of our ultimatum. Earlier, we had categorically asked the CJ to expunge the irrelevant and undemocratic remarks. The Supreme Court will be closed for vacation. The working period will begin on October 3. We will make success our movement by realizing the one-point demand that is resignation of the CJ,” Barrsiter Tapos said.
Making a call to the lawyers, he said, “We’ll boycott all activities and programmes of SK Sinha. I urge all not to attend any programme of him… I like to say clearly that our movement is against them who have stigmatized the judiciary by hatching conspiracy to create conflict among judiciary, executive and legislative branches. Our organization has started movement to foil the conspiracy.”
Taking a tough stance against SK Sinha, Barrister Tapos said, “The CJ yet not expunged the remarks. Besides he also has broken his oath. For that reason, he could not stay as the CJ. A judge has shown haughtiness to sack another person who holds a constitutional post. It’s not only breaking up his oath but also similar to sedition. So, we expect that he (CJ) will resign in accordance with the code of conduct… It’s our demand.”
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has urged journalists not to misquote him as such incidents create confusion among people. “I am requesting you (journalists), not to misquote me. Confusions have been created regarding my speech.
“Whatever I say in court, it is being distorted. I have to face embarrassing situation for this. It is not possible for me to arrange a press conference and address it. I can ask question to engaged lawyer during the hearing of a case. It is my liberty. Please keep in mind that if you write about that without realising the reason behind asking the question, it can create mistakes,” he said.
