The market is well set as well as big. Almost all essential items are available there. The market remains crowded from morning till the evening. People from all walks of life go there to purchase their necessary things. All the sellers are female, though some males assist them.
As all the entrepreneurs of the market are women, the bazar is called “Bou Bazzar”, locally known as Kathuria Bou Bazar. The market is situated in Imambari area at Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital.
About 5, 00 women are engaged in trading there. Usually, their husbands and children bring vegetables from Shyampur, a commercial hub located in the old part of the capital Dhaka, and other wholesale markets to the bazar and they sell the agri-items at the market.
Traders of the market said people, who come to the market to buy their necessary things, are mostly female. The market was set up in 1988. Later, taking lease of some land, a few local people set up the kitchen market in 2000 after the construction of Buriganga 2nd bridge.
Traders said, usually, about 10,000 people come to the kitchen market to buy commodities every day. Aleya, a trader, told that the market is crowed in the morning. She said, “Female customers prefer the market to come as all the traders are women.”
She also claimed that the prices of commodities are comparatively cheaper than any other markets, including Keraniganj and Zinzira kitchen markets in the area.
