Due to hostile weather during this summer days and cold at nights, paddy yield is getting worse in 8 upazilas of Rangpur district. Farmers are incurring huge losses of their harvestings. The Agriculture Department says, neck blasts have attacked boro paddy of 7.25 hectares of land in Rangpur district. Boro paddy neck blasts have appeared in different areas in Gangachara. As a result, paddy has become ‘chitha’. No fungicide is working. In this situation the farmers are suffering huge losses. Farmer Amjad Hossain of Barabil Union of the upazila planted B-Dhan-28 in 44 acres of land this year. From the beginning he sprayed the fungicide on the land for seven times. Even then his paddy become sticky.
He also said that he planted paddy by recruiting day labor with great difficulty. But it’s all over. When he sees rice, he cries. Mintu Mia, a farmer from Purbanabanidas village, planted Bridhan-28 variety of boro paddy on 22 acres land. The paddy of his land became sticky. He said no action was held even after spraying pesticides three times. Number of ‘chitha’ is increasing day by day. In this condition he is cutting paddy and feeding it to the cows as straw.
This situation is not only in Bagpur or East Navnidas. It occurred almost everywhere in the upazila especially those areas where planted Bri-Dhan-28 planted.
