BSS, Rangpur :
Diversification of income generating activities (IGAs) with multi-dimensional government assistance continues boosting macro-economy empowering rural women in Rangpur region in last eleven years.
Officials and experts said hundreds of poor rural women have archived self-reliance through IGAs bringing solvency to their families driving away the seasonal curse of “monga” permanently from the region.
Talking to BSS, Chairman of Rangpur-based research organisation Northbengal Institute of Development Studies Dr. Syed Samsuzzaman said rural women have set up a dazzling example in substantially contributing to rural development.
Earlier, poor rural women had to lead miserable life even eleven years ago during seasonal lean periods of ‘Aswin’ and ‘Kartik’ months due to joblessness situation for lack of farm-activities till beginning of Aman rice harvest. “Following successful implementation of comprehensive social safety-net programmes (SSNPs) and other efforts by the government, rural poor, including women, are not experiencing any ‘monga’ in last eleven years,” he said.
The main SSNPs include Test Relief, Food for Work and Works for Taka, Vulnerable Group Development, Vulnerable Group Feeding, employment generations, food friendly programme, providing shelters to homeless families, assistance and allowances.
“Socioeconomic condition of the poor marked improvement following their engagements with various IGAs under comprehensive GO-NGO-private sector initiatives in last eleven years,” Dr. Zaman added.
Deputy Director of the District Department of Women Affairs Kawser Pervin said the socioeconomic status of rural women has improved following their engagements with IGAs under various effective GO-NGO-private sector initiatives.
