Handmade bombs have been exploded near the Awami League headquarters in Dhaka. No casualties were reported. The explosions took place when a rally was in progress there on Tuesday.
Two bombs exploded at both ends of the street leading to the office at the capital’s Gulistan area.
Activists of the ruling party and its affiliates had gathered to attend a rally in protest of the BNP-sponsored blockade and shutdowns.
The first explosion happened at 11:16am at one end of the street and a minute later another blast took place at the opposite end.
Around 1,000 supporters of the ruling Awami League, who came at the rally, started demonstrating immediately after the blasts.
The rally was addressed by the party’s Dhaka metropolitan unit General Secretary Mofazzal Hossain Maya and Organising Secretary Shahe Alam Murad.
Failing to hold a rally on Jan 5 on Dhaka, the BNP-led 20-Party alliance called an indefinite transport blockade across Bangladesh. It has also called for shutdowns amid the blockade.
It has called for a 72-hour shutdown, which started from early morning Sunday.
Meanwhile, the ruling Awami League has been regularly holding rallies and processions in Dhaka and different parts of the country protesting the BNP-sponsored programmes.
