The body of a foreign sea captain, who went missing after slipping into Karnaphuli River on Monday night, has been found after 38 hours under a jetty of the port on Wednesday.
The victim has been identified as Vasileios Markopoulos, a 57-year-old Greek who was the captain of a Cyprus-flag carrier MV Evinia.
The body was found in the river adjacent to the port’s Newmooring Container Terminal around 9:45am, said Director of Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Lt Col Md Abdul Gaffar quoting crewmembers of MV Erina.
Coast Guard and port security officials jointly recovered the body with the help of an ambulance ship, he said.
The ship carrying the flag of Cyprus carried steel pipes and machinery from China and anchored at the jetty No. 7 of the port on Monday.
On Monday night, Vasileios slipped from a rope ladder as he was checking the vessel’s draught at jetty No. 7 at the port around 8:00pm, according to the port authorities.
People on the ship could not rescue the captain immediately as he was caught in the ebb tide, said the police report.
Seven patrol and two turbo boats began searching immediately after the incident.
Gaffar said they informed Markopoulos’ family about the accident through the shipping agent.
Reazuddin Khan, local agent of the ship and chairman of Incheate shipping company, said the body of the captain would be sent to his country after due formalities.
A general diary (GD) was filed with Bandar Police Station after the captain went missing, Khan said.
MV Erina, a bulk carrier, is carrying around 28,458 tonnes of materials including steel pipes and machineries for Payra seaport in Patuakhali, the correspondent said.
