BNP`s Siraj wins Bogura-6 by-polls

BNP- backed candidate Golam Mohammad Siraj, who won unofficially Bogra- 6 constituency’s by-election, in a reaction on Monday night said that he would ask the sitting MPs of the parliament to be elected again in fair polls. “We will demand re- election and immediate release of Begum Khaleda Zia as the government has kept her in jail with injustice,” Siraj told The New Nation over cell phone last night.
He also thanked the people of Bogura- 6 constituency for electing him in the by-election. On Monday night, Returning officer Mahbub Hossain Shah unofficially declared winning of the BNP candidate Golam Mohammad Siraj. He bagged 89,742 votes and his nearest contester Awami League candidates got 32,297 votes. The Election Commission (EC) used Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in all 141 polling stations.
The constituency was declared vacant as BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was elected from the parliamentary in the December 30 general elections, did not take oath as MP within the4 90 days from the date of the first meeting of parliament.
Golam Mohammad Siraj of BNP, T Zaman Niketa of Awami League, Nurul Islam Omar of Jatiya Party, Dr Mansur Rahman of Bangladesh Congress, Mufti Rafiqul Islam of Muslim League and independent candidate Md Minhaz Mondal are there in the election race.
Besides, another independent candidate Syed Kabir Ahmed Mithu quit the election race after the expiry of the deadline.
There are 387,458 voters — 191,668 males and 195,790 females – in the constituency.
Earlier, the EC identified 111 out of total 141polling centres as important.
Five policemen and 12 Ansar members have been deployed in every important polling center while four policemen and 12 Ansar members at a normal centre.
Besides, 12 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 12 teams of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and 12 executive magistrates were there in the field apart from 12 teams of striking forces to ensure security.
