Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said that the Jatiya Oikyafront would decide whether it would sit for a fresh round of talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina once the agenda was set.
“The issue of scraping the election must have to be there as an agenda and then we will consider about the talks,” Fakhrul also spokesperson of the Oikyafront said while talking to reporters after offering Fatiha at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet.
BNP, Jatiya Oikyafront and eight left-leaning democratic alliance have been demanding a fresh election, bringing allegations of vote rigging, ballot stuffing and violence in the December 30 national election.
Amid the demand, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would invite opposition political parties for dialogue with her.
Our sylhet Correspondent adds:Responding to a query over the issue, Fakhrul said, “We do not know about agenda of the dialogue. We will take decision in this regard when we will be informed about the agenda.”
Referring to the pre-polls dialogue with Sheikh Hasina, President of the ruling Awami League, Fakhrul said that the dialogue would not be fruitful if it is held like the previous one.
The BNP leader said, the government will have to uphold the people’s voting rights through holding a fresh election under a nonpartisan caretaker administration.
Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance secured 288 seats while Oikyafront of which the BNP is a part got only eight seats in the December 30 national election.
BNP and Oikyafront rejected results of the election, and did not take oath as lawmakers of the 11th parliament.
“A black chapter of the country’s history was drafted through the December 30 national election,” Fakhrul said alleging that the ruling quarter snatched people’s democratic rights violating the constitution to vote freely.
Responding to another query about BNP’s participation in the local government election, Fakhrul said, “It is not a major concern for BNP as it does not ensure change in the state power.”
“The entire world has seen how incapable our Election Commission is to hold a free, fair and credible national election. So, there is no question to take part in any election under its management,” he added.
