The BNP on Saturday warned the governments that the people would not accept planned gas price hike, calling it illogical.
“We want to say that any increasing of gas price will be taken as a sad decision considering the people’s average financial conditions. As a party of people, BNP will not also accept it,” said BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal. He said it while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office.
He said, “All the gas companies are now making huge profits. Even then Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) chairman after a public hearing spoke about raising gas tariffs. This is unethical.”
Moazzem Hossain Alal said, the Finance Minister stated a few days ago, gas is not for cooking, and there is no point of launching a movement against gas price hike.
During a recent public hearing arranged by the BERC, Titas Managing Director Mir Moshiur Rahman proposed the increasing of the gas price for domestic users by around twofold.
According to the proposal, household gas price will be hiked by highest 140 percent, raising a single burner to Tk 1,100 from Tk 600 and the double burner to Tk 1,200 from Tk 650 per month.
The BNP leader also accused the government of using militancy issue to suppress the oppositions. He said, the BNP arrested and confirmed punishment to the masterminds.
He also claimed that his party had revived democracy.
Moazzem Hossain Alal criticised also the recent frequent hajj flights cancellations. He termed it as Religious Ministry’s mismanagement saying it was causing huge sufferings to pilgrims.
“There has been a messy situation since the beginning of the year regarding hajj management. As per government statistics, 15 hajj flights have so far been cancelled, making 7,000 people’s hajj uncertainty,” he said.
BNP Joint-Secretary General Harunur Rashid, central leader Syed Emran Saleh Prince, Sanaullah Mian, Shahidul Islam Babul, Munir Hossain and Belal Ahmed were present, among others, in the briefing.
